Weather affects everybody, and perhaps one of the biggest impacts for some people is when the schedule of an educational institution is disrupted because of it. It's pretty easy to find reliable forecasts on what kind of weather a storm system will bring, but it can be difficult to extrapolate this information to daily planning if school closings are not yet announced. School Closing Probabilities attempts to bridge this gap. When a storm may impact school activities within 48 hours, we forecast the probability that weather or cleanup conditions will warrant a closing or delay. Probabilities update as necessary, up to several times per day. More information about the how the probabilities work can be found under tutorials.
School Closing Probabilities is in the experimental stage. At present, we only forecast for a small area in central Long Island. The current domain name, tvstormwatch (tv = three village), is a prototype for a much larger web service we hope to develop that will allow weather enthusiasts across the country to add and forecast probabilities for their own school. In order to take this next step, however, we need to determine how much popularity such a service would obtain. Also, we need to collect data on how accurate these forecasts can be, and experiment with different statistical methods in the process. We appreciate any feedback.
